Compression!

There’s been a lot happening on the Compression! Front.

We had our grant review at the end of January, and we did well, points-wise. However, everyone is having tough budget times right now, not the least of which is the City of Reno. It’s more important than ever that we continue to urge our public officials to fund the arts! Events like Compression! cannot happen without public funding. We’d love to give everything away, but it costs money in insurance premiums, rental fees, equipment and services that we have to pay to make it happen. I will jump off this soap box now, ’nuff said, but it’s important to keep producting awesome events in the Truckee Meadows!

First, we should be posting a meeting soon, so if you feel so compelled, be looking for volunteer opportunities, it’s definitely a good time.

Second, I got confirmation on TWO additional groups this year…

A friend of mine who does ballroom dancing is interested in performing. We don’t have a huge amount of details yet on this front, but as soon as we have more and all is confirmed, we’ll pass it along.

From the fiery end, I got confirmation from Christian and Andrea, the Tahoe Fire Dancers, that they will be joining us in July! They missed last year because of a conflicting gig and we missed them, so we are VERY excited to have them back amongst us. They have some new troupe members too, and we are WAY excited to see what yummy stuff they have in store for us!

This year, we’re having a party! With grant revenues continuing to decline, we thought it would be an awesome idea to throw a party! We did a Tutu party a couple of years ago, and pretty much since then, folks have been asking us when our next one is going to be…..well, here it is:

When: Saturday Febrauary 20, 2010

Cost: $10 pre-purchase or at the door with a Tutu, or $15 at the door with no costume or pre-purchase
Who: Controlled Burn!!

There will be raffle prizes, tutu contest with three categories where prizes will be awarded: Most Creative, Most Masculine, and “Greenest” Tutu (made of recycled material). Additionally, music by Auditory Canvas will be featured, as well as performances by BoHo Hoops, Controlled Burn, and hipSwitch bellydance. It promises to be a rockin’ good time!

We wanted to take the time to thank everyone who participated and volunteered for Compression! It truly takes a village to put on an event of this magnitude and we are thankful and humbled that our village is filled with such kick-ass, hard working people!

The event was absolutely amazing, all the performers shared their talent, time, and gifts with us, for which Reno was a much richer place! Men Wielding Fire, Prism Magic, Controlled Burn, All Nessy’s Friends, Hipstirr, Velocity Movement, and eNVision Performing Arts represented us well in our vending area, and the day was a resounding success!

It’s getting close! I am SO excited! I have a lot of updating to do, so will post another post once I have that done…but the support we are receiving has been absolutely amazing!

With little more than a month to go before the event, things are switching in to high gear, here!

Things are becoming finalized, excitement is building, and life is good!

We were seriously bummed about the budget hit the Arts in Nevada took with the budget reduction handed down to the Nevada Arts Council that affected Artists throughout the state, but we are more determined than ever to put on a kick-ass show! We did get some funding, and it will all go back to you, the audience!

hi everyone!

wow, time sure flies when you’re having fun! we are just over two months out until the event and life is moving along nicely for our fire celebration!

earlier this week, we had a very successful and positive grant review with the Nevada Arts Council. we scored high percentage-wise and depending on budget cuts, we can appreciate very generous support from the council. this is awesome news, it all goes towards producing the event, and as it gets bigger, it’s amazing how much stuff costs and also heartening how many awesome people come together to make something like this work.

i met with todd south yesterday, and it’s looking promising for getting some live music into the event! we already had black rock city all-stars set to throw down with us, and now todd’s got something up his sleeve…stay tuned to see, we will post here once more details become clear.

i got confirmation also very recently that Unmata’s own Verbatim will be joining us. Along with Asha, there will be some belly shaking awesomeness happening for sure!

in addition, our fire groups are firming up too, with confirmation this week from both the Vulcan Crew and Copper Lantern. We are SO EXCITED that both these folks have decided to join us!

dave cherry, local burner and talented artist extraordinaire, has been working on our poster, and we are thankful and humbled by his talent! we will post the poster and postcard as soon as we finalize!

in other news, our special event application went in, we got insurance for the event, and most of our funding is secured. we are in the process of developing a site plan, and working out more more more logistics. i should be able to post a preliminary schedule soon, so stay tuned!
