Compression!

Join us in just TWO WEEKS for Compression! A Celebration of Fire and Performance Art. Here’s the Press Release:

Controlled Burn invites you to attend “Compression”, Reno’s 3rd Annual FESTIVAL featuring ART and FIRE at RENO CITY PLAZA in the heart of downtown as part of Reno’s 15th Annual Artown Celebration. This FREE event will take place Saturday, July 24, 2010 from 3:00p.m. to 11:00p.m. Sponsors include City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, Nevada Arts Council, Reno’s Club Cal Neva and ABC Fire, Inc.

The allure of Fire to humankind is irresistible. During daylight hours, demonstrations from a compendium of local artists from Burntknuckle Glassworks will feature live glass-blowing demonstrations. We will also feature a burn barrel garden and various fire-inspired art projects around the plaza and street. This year we close Virginia Street from Mill to First Streets to allow more and better seating on the plaza. BohoHoops will be with us again to demonstrate and offer a free hooping playshop. The dance stage welcomes new variety this year with day time dancers including local belly dance artists hipSwitch and Asha World Dancers in addition to a ballroom formation team demonstration by Rhythmic Renegades and Sacramento’s Verbatim Street Team with selected members of Unmata and Modern Gypsy from Redding. Prism Magic will be with us featuring Playa wear for fashionistas seeking funky costume pieces or accessories. Food and beverage service will be provided by sponsor Club Cal Neva. After dark, propane flame effects by Dave King of Controlled Burn, Inc. will be featured. Experience a fusion of ancient martial arts of the Far East exhibited in staff spinning and fire dancing involving poi, fans, fingers, and more! Poi originates from the South Pacific indigenous Maori culture of New Zealand and Controlled Burn and other fire artists add a modern twist. Choreographed to modern, driving music, Controlled Burn, Inc. and friends from the region promise a fiery finale second to none.

This FREE EVENT is open to the public. Please leave alcohol of any kind and pets at home.

Compression is part of the 15th annual Artown festival, July 1 – 31, 2010.  The month-long summer arts festival features more than 350 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide, with major funding provided by the City of Reno.
