On a Saturday morning in the not-too-distant past, much too early for some of us, but oh, how we suffer for our art, Controlled Burn gathered at a local location for everyone to renew our annual Fire Extinguisher certification, and also get a “Performer Safety Class”, which is required by our members each year.

We started the morning with Lafe, of ABC Fire, who gave us the fire extinguisher class:

And as you can plainly see, our members are rapt, as they pay attention to the discussion after the video in order for us to do well on the test!

Then, of course, we headed outside for the performer safety class, led this year by Brian, our new safety director. He did an excellent job schooling us on how to put out performers, and other members of Controlled Burn jumped in with unique and personally encountered situations we may find ourselves in. This included lighting the fuel dump on fire (ON PURPOSE):

and learning how the safety mechanism operated on the dump so that it removes the oxygen from the fire, extinguishing it after pretty short order:

We all had a great time, it was another opportunity to get together and practice our craft, and it was good to get the refresher course!

Stay tuned for other trainings and classes by Controlled Burn!

Peace!

~Gemini

Hi all!

Matty Pockets here. Recently, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about learning how to fire dance/fire spin. Well, instead of waiting for me or Gemini to get to your questions, here’s some of the most popular questions we’ve been getting, and their answers!

As I get more, or if you have a question you think should be on here, feel free to either ask it in the comments, or email us at info@controlledburnreno.com!

Q: What tools do I need? What do I need to bring? Do I need experience?
A: The only tools that you need initially, and the only thing you need to bring, is your willingness to learn, and a good attitude! We provide practice poi for you to start with, but if you want to make your own practice poi (which we suggest) so you can practice at home, we’ll teach you how! And as for experience, well….we all had to start somewhere, so let’s start here, shall we?

Q: Do I have to practice with poi?
A: No, no you do not! We currently teach poi, staff, and fingers/fans! We also teach fire safety, which you’ll be taught before you even start spinning any real fire. If you have another tool that you want to learn…well…we’ll try our best to give advice!

Q: What’s the cost?
A: We humbly request a $5 donation for our classes, although it’s NOT required. But practice poi and practice staffs are rather cheap and not too expensive. Actual fire tools..well….those prices can vary wildly.

Q: Where are classes? What time are they?
A: Class times and schedules are always posted here on the Front Page in the rotating News feed. Check often for any updates!
